Cheers to Kate McCue, the first American female captain of a mega cruise ship!

It’s an industry first worth celebrating, as an American woman takes command of a mega cruise ship. 37-year-old Kate McCue, a native of San Francisco, will soon be on the helm of Celebrity CruisesCelebrity Summit. The ship, a 91,000-ton vessel that can accommodate 2,158 passengers and almost 1,000 crew, sails from the East Coast to Bermuda.

McCue is a graduate of California Maritime Academy, has been in the maritime industry for 15 years, and had worked with Celebrity’s sister brand Royal Caribbean, where she made her way up to Master Mariner. Her appointment was proudly shared by Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, herself a trailblazer as Celebrity’s first female President and CEO.

Non-American women have been on the helm of mega cruise ships before. In 2007, Sweden’s Karin Stahre-Janson was hired by Royal Caribbean, and she was soon followed by a woman from Portugal in 2008 (also hired by Royal Caribbean), and female captains from the UK and Denmark for P&O Cruises and Cunard.

What an inspiring development for women who may want to go into challenging and rewarding careers in the cruise industry. Best wishes to the new captain, and all those who will follow in her footsteps.
