Princess Cruises Seeks “The Voice of the Ocean”

Will reality TV’s iconic “The Voice” be a big hit for cruisers too? Princess Cruises brings the smash TV show to life on the high seas, via “The Voice of the Ocean.” Princess Cruises is a legend when it comes to cruising and entertainment; after all, it was one of the storied line’s vessels that had been featured in the cultural phenomenon, The Love Boat, bringing cruising into the televisions – and travel aspirations – of people from all over the world. Indeed, merging cruising and television together can be a powerful force. Now, the line is partnering with NBC to bring in features of popular TV show “The Voice” on select cruises.

NBC’s “The Voice” is a reality singing competition with an innovative format. Basically, it begins with “blind auditions,” where musician-coaches select aspiring singers for mentoring based on their voice alone. Distinct, rotating “I Want You” chairs do not allow coaches to see the singer until the coach selects the singer by pressing a button that swivels his/her chair around. Singers not picked by any coach are eliminated, while singers picked by multiple coaches get to pick the coach of their choice.

The coaches then mentor the artists they pick during the auditions and pit them against each other for further narrowing of participants. The select few then move on to televised live performances that are open for public voting. Reality TV power players like John de Mol and Mark Burnett are involved in the hit show, and musician coaches are typically known musical superstars like Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera.

Princess Cruises’ “The Voice of the Ocean” will be bringing in aspects of the TV show to select cruises, beginning with Regal Princess in October. The competition is open to passengers 16 years of age or older. There will be karaoke auditions, mentoring courtesy of the cruise line’s entertainers, rehearsals with back-up singers and the Princess Band, live performances before an audience and audience voting. The iconic coaches’ “I Want You” chairs are also expected during the competition. The winner brings home a trophy, bragging rights as the cruise’s “The Voice of the Ocean,” and what will certainly be an unforgettable experience.
