35th Annual Salute to the United States Coast Guard honors members, and raises $1 million.
The Coast Guard Foundation was founded in 1969, by USCG veterans who wanted to bridge the gap between the Coast Guard Academy’s needs and the USCG’s operating budget, using private funds. The Foundation’s mission has since expanded to cover the needs of all USCG members and their families. Their many accomplishments include scholarships and grants for select enlisted personnel, their spouses and their children; construction and donation of training and workout equipment; and fostering community environments at USCG bases by building playgrounds for families.
For the past decades, they have also been conducting a yearly event, the Annual Salute to the U.S. Coast Guard, in honor of brave, deserving USCG members and to raise funds. The 35th such event was held last October 8th in New York City.
The event’s honorees included the crew of the Cutter Stratton, known for a billion-dollar drug bust; Station Los Angeles-Long Beach boat crew CG-29123, for the heroic rescue of a missing mariner; the late Coast Guard Foundation chairman Bob Flynn, who was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Public Service Award; and Mike Petters representing Huntington Ingalls, a company that has long supported the Coast Guard Foundation. Another highlight of the evening was the presence of guest speaker Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, famous for being the hero of one of aviation’s most iconic moments, the “Miracle on the Hudson.”
Sponsorships to attend the event, held at the Times Square Marriott Marquis, ranged from $1,250 for an individual ticket to $100,000 tables and recognition during the program. More than 500 people were in attendance, and over $1 million was raised during the event. $250,000 of these funds are earmarked for the Coast Guard Foundation’s scholarship program, to help fulfill the college dreams of the children of enlisted USCG members.
We at Kemplon Engineering joins the Coast Guard Foundation and a grateful nation in honoring the USCG’s brave men and women, their families, and all those who support them.
