In a bold move signaling their confidence in the growth of river cruising, Viking Cruises christened 12 new ships in simultaneous celebrations in Amsterdam and Rostock, Germany. This christening of 10 Viking Longships and 2 other vessels made specifically for the Elbe River, brings the company’s fleet up to an impressive 60! Kemplon Engineering reports.
Viking Cruises is the world’s leading river cruise line, providing the market with scenic cruising options in China, Egypt, Europe, Russia and Southeast Asia. The award-winning line counts plenty of accolades from the likes of Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Travel Weekly, and Cruise Critic, just to name a few. The line will soon be having its maiden season for ocean cruising this year via the Viking Star, and plans have recently been announced for cruise operations in the United States to start in 2017, taking passengers on a luxury journey down the Mississippi River.
Viking Cruises is showing a lot of growth; just last year, they had set a Guinness World Record for launching the most new ships in a day. And why shouldn’t they be bold? Between 2001 and 2015, Viking’s North American passengers reportedly saw a 30% increase, whereas mainstream ocean liners saw just 5%. Tourists are also increasingly attracted to river cruising, with options that offer access to destinations that mega-ships cannot easily reach due to their size, less crowds, and, in the case of lines like Viking, spacious cabin offerings.
Viking Cruises’ bold moves are really bringing river cruises front and center in the travel options of many potential passengers. We at Kemplon Engineering wish them luck in all their endeavors, and we are excited to see how the river cruise option grows alongside today’s mega-ship, ocean cruise industry players.
